History of the Cooperative

The journey and activities of the cooperative from its establishment in 1954 to the present day.

The Historical Course of the Katouna Forest Cooperative

The Compulsory Forest Cooperative of the Co-owned Forest of Katouna (A.S.D.S.) was officially founded in 1954. The purpose of its establishment was the rational management, promotion, and protection of the natural wealth extending across the mountainous massifs of the magnificent Agrafa, at the western edge of the Thessalian plain.

From an altitude of 830 meters up to the imposing "Mputsos" peak at 1,835 meters, the forest is an invaluable green lung and a living ecosystem, closely connected to the local community of the Karditsa Prefecture.

Protection, Flora and Ecological Restoration

The sustainability of the Katouna forest is based on the strict protection rules implemented by our Board of Directors. The timber capital and the rich flora and fauna of the area are consistently safeguarded.

  • Effective guarding: Protection of the total area from illegal activities and illegal logging.
  • Grazing control: Strict prohibition of uncontrolled grazing to protect young trees.
  • Ecological restoration: Targeted actions for the renewal of the forest and ensuring it for future generations.

The "Manganiara" Mountaineering Refuge

One of the most important projects of the Cooperative is the Permanent Mountaineering Refuge at the enchanting location of "Manganiara". Designed to be fully harmonized with the natural environment, it is an attraction for nature lovers, hikers, and mountaineers.

  • Accommodation capacity of 17 beds in comfortable spaces.
  • Basic heating and water supply facilities for a safe stay in the mountains.
  • Direct access to the walking trails of Agrafa.
Important Announcement: The refuge will remain closed for maintenance reasons until June 2026. We are working intensively to upgrade our infrastructure!
